Monster Hunter Wilds
Hunt large monsters, carve them up and build the gear for the next hunt from the parts.
What it is about
You hunt large animals in open regions, carve them up and build the gear for the next hunt from the parts. That is the whole loop, and it has carried the series for twenty years.
What is new is how little gets in the way. A mount takes you to the trail on its own, the weather visibly changes the regions, and you can carry two weapons at once instead of one. Fourteen weapon types are available, and they genuinely play differently.
For two, everything runs over the net; there is no local co-op. In exchange the story can this time be played together from the first hour to the last, without cutscenes tearing the group apart.
Our verdict for couples
This series has long struggled with two people who want to experience the story together. Here that works from the first hour to the last for the first time, and that is the real change. A hunt including preparation and carving takes half an hour, and it wants to be played in one sitting; for a short evening it is no good. In return the entry is friendlier than in any previous entry, your mount takes you everywhere and the weapons explain themselves along the way. On Steam the game sits at sixty-eight percent, though the anger there is almost entirely about expansion pricing and performance on PC.

What other co-op fans say
The anger on Steam is mostly not about the game. Loudest and most frequent is the pricing of the expansions, and the fact that loyal buyers are asked to pay almost full price again for an upgrade pack. Performance on PC comes right after. About the hunting itself people write far more warmly: the praise goes above all to the mount that takes you to the trail on its own, and to the SOS system that fills open hunts with people and with computer companions. One recurring objection concerns us in particular. More than once people write that this entry is easier than its predecessor, and that playing together therefore feels less necessary.
- “SOS flares will have offline NPC and online players which is a huge thing.”
- “Having a ride all the time is really helpful rather than Running always.”
- “Good game but so far much easier than MH World so co-op feels redundant unfortunately”

Absolum
A beat ’em up with randomised runs from the Streets of Rage 4 people — and considerably easier as a pair than alone.

Four people, narrow alleys and more rat-men than fit on the screen.

An action role-playing game in a grim world where two people can set out from one television.

Grounded
Shrunk to the size of an ant in your own back garden: the sprinkler is now a natural disaster.
